Osteoporosis – largely misunderstood

from:

NC

(NC)—Osteoporosis has often been called the "silent thief" because it progresses without symptoms. This condition causes the demineralization of bone and is a big concern due to the greater risk of broken bones; a high risk condition as people age. For many it is almost too late by the time osteoporosis is diagnosed. Prevention therefore is the best medicine when trying to avoid the onset of this debilitating disease.

Calcium is often touted as the best way to prevent osteoporosis. A review of the world's population however reveals that in the countries where high levels of calcium are consumed, high levels of osteoporosis are also present. Clearly there is more to preventing osteoporosis than just calcium intake; the absorption and utilization of calcium must also be considered.

Utilization of calcium must be facilitated through the use of specific minerals. The most important of these is magnesium, and this is frequently missing or insufficient in many supplements. Dr. Guy Abraham MD used a 1.2:1 ratio magnesium to calcium along with other factors in a study that resulted in a bone density 16 times greater than those using dietary advice alone.

In many instances, subjects have improved bone density yet remain at risk for fractures. This is due to the quality of bone that is built. Bone structure is crucial and can only build correctly with needed nutrients. Vitamin D and zinc enhance absorption and utilization of calcium, building a more fracture resistant bone according to studies.

In nature, calcium occurs in many forms. Most supplements however, deliver it only as calcium carbonate. Organic forms such as calcium citrate, gluconate or lactate are much more easily absorbed and utilized, particularly in a liquid. Liquids do not have to be dissolved so this makes more of the substance available to the tissues for absorption. For a balanced calcium supplement in a liquid organic form, look at Salus, a company that understands the issues in preventing osteoporosis and maintaining healthy bones.
